Pad printing inks for TPE

Thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) are versatile plastic materials that combine the flexibility of elastic polymers with the durability of thermoplastics.

These materials are found in a wide variety of applications, including consumer goods, medical devices, power tools, housewares, shoe insoles, and motorcycle grips.

One key advantage of TPE is its sustainability. Unlike traditional rubber, which is not fully reusable, TPE is 100% recyclable. Old TPE products can be ground into granules and repurposed into new items, supporting a circular economy. Additionally, TPE can be molded into any shape or size, offering unparalleled customization for diverse needs.

When it comes to pad printing ink for TPE, things get a bit more technical.

TPE materials can be categorized into different groups.

Most TPE varieties have low surface tension, requiring pre-treatment—such as flame or Corona treatment—to ensure strong adhesion.

Certain TPE types may benefit from a PP adhesion promoter before printing. Post-treatment processes like heat application, flame treatment, or a Leister blower are also commonly used to enhance adhesion further.

Due to the multitude of TPE types and blends, identifying a one-size-fits-all ink is challenging.

Because the processing conditions differ from one printer to another, conducting preliminary tests is always necessary!
